One of the many reasons I became a community organizer is because of reading Shane Claiborne's books and hearing him speak once in Kentucky. I was on a mission trip with my youth from Kansas in eastern Kentucky working on homes and we heard Shane speak at a music festival. I only really remember one thing he said but it was "how well do you know the poor in your own community"? That question convicted me and led me to organize congregations in small town Kansas to work together on homes for families in our own community. That experience was one of many that led me to the work in congregational based community organizing that I do today.
